Job Purpose:

Maintain and administer production, test and development databases.
Work with Development team on database design.
Develop metrics to monitor and model capacities of databases and database systems.
Manage database security, backup and recovery strategies.

Accountabilities:
  • To work on all Operational Databases, principally Oracle but including MS SQL and Sybase. These Databases are integral to RIAS’s Policy administration, ACD, MIS, Intranet and HR systems or on new developments as identified by the business.
  • Work with the Development DBA on the design and development of RIAS system databases (primarily Oracle and SQL Server) and logical and physical data models in accordance with business and technical requirements in order to provide operational support for these going forwards.
  • Manage the environments for all development and production business databases
  • Ensure operational databases maintain effective performance as business volumes and users fluctuate
  • Undertake capacity planning and management as far as operational database performance is concerned
  • Liaise with relevant external parties, especially Oracle, to maximise RIAS’s knowledge and usage of their relevant products.
  • Liaise with IT Development to effectively and proactively manage and monitor all of the production database environments.
  • Develop, implement and manage operational, backup, recovery and security strategies
  • Make recommendations as to database strategies and/or operations having considered business objectives and technology trends. This includes recovery performance and resilience issues
Essential Competencies:
  • Thorough and comprehensive understandings from 1st principles of relational database design.
  • Expert working knowledge of currently supported versions of Oracle & SQL Server
  • Experience of hands-on Database Administration
  • Trained in Oracle DBA Fundamentals.
  • Ability to guide and influence RIAS development ensuring operational requirements and principles are always met. While understanding the impact of their role on others.
  • Not only to have very strong problem solving skills but to also think beyond existing boundaries, without procedure or precedent.
  • Redhat/OEL Linux Enterprise 4 and 5
  • Oracle Database 10g/11g including
  • High Availabilty (Clusterware and RAC)
  • Disaster Recovery (Dataguard – Physical and Logical)
  • Storage Management (ASM)
  • Backup (RMAN, Datapump)
  • Performance Analysis and SQL Tuning, Problem Diagnostics and Solving
  • SQL and PL/SQL
  • Experience of supporting Production Systems (Over 700 concurrent users)
  • Industry Certification in Oracle
Desirable Competencies:
  • Working knowledge of Sybase.
  • Exposure to Oracle Warehouse Builder, Portal, Oracle Designer, Erwin.
  • Oracle Business Intelligence
  • Windows 2000/2003 Server
  • Shell Scripting in Linux
  • SQL Server 2000/2005
  • Citrix
Performance Measures:
  • Database availability of 99.999%
  • Maintain agreed database resiliency and recovery capabilities
  • Ensure that agreed technical initiatives are implemented on time and budget
  • Conforms to RIAS adopted project methodology and ’ways of working’
  • Good working relationship with IT Development
  • Minimised impact to the business operations
  • Production of agreed documentation to agreed guidelines
  • Optimum use of tools, and system resources
  • Complete consistent and accurate database software installations
  • Building automated, trouble-free monitoring processes.
  • Provide effective and consistent communication of that knowledge to all relevant parties.
  • Manage and test the Oracle database backup and recovery strategy and Oracle security strategy.
