Top 10 holiday destinations for over 50s

When it comes to holidaying, the over 50s are on a roll. Thanks to healthy diets, an active lifestyle and longer life expectancy, people in this age group are adventurous and discerning. They want to visit new places and try out new activities when they go on holiday.Couple walking through park

Over 50s specialist RIAS, recently did a survey1 to find the Top 10 European Destinations visited by Over 50s in the UK – and here they are:

1. Spain – top of the list, with locations such as Madrid, Barcelona, Majorca, Ibiza and the Canary Islands firm favourites.

2. France – always popular with over 50s who like to go for luxury sailing holidays on the French Riviera, skiing in the Alps and romantic weekends in Paris. You’ll also find a plethora of chateau’s and vineyards to delight keen food and wine connoisseurs.

3. Italy – renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Visitors to Italy love the art galleries and monuments, delicious food, elegant fashions and beautiful coastlines. Rome, Venice, Florence and Milan are top favourites.

4. Greece – a romantic destination, synonymous with weddings, honeymoons and moonlit beaches. It’s a country steeped in history with archaeological sites to explore in Athens, Crete, Delphi and Thessalonica where you can immerse yourself in Greek culture.

5. Portugal – the Algarve, situated in the South of Portugal, is famous for its coastline, fish and local wine, with a varied choice of resorts, and prices to suit all ages and tastes.

6. Turkey - a beautiful country that’s great for outdoor activities, historical wonders and glimpses of paradise. The tranquil and car-free Princes Islands are a short ferry-ride from Istanbul and are extremely popular with discerning tourists looking for a more relaxed pace.

7. Other – with so many wonderful countries to explore, it is no surprise that ‘other’ featured so prominently on our list!

8. The Netherlands - beyond the windmills and the canals there’s a lot to see in Holland. You’ll find Hoge De Veluwe National Park has acres of heath land and woodlands, and you must check out the Boymans van Beuningen - the Netherlands’ finest art museum.

9. Cyprus – go and experience the roots of one of the world’s oldest civilizations. You’ll find historical sites wherever you go in Cyprus and it’s worth visiting the ruins of Kourion and the Sanctuary of Aphrodite before exploring further.

10. Germany - from the Alps in the south and Harz to the north, Germany is blessed with stunning mountain scenery. Take to the river between Berlin and Prague for some dramatic views, and then catch the culture in Berlin or take a musical tour around the country, visiting the birthplace of Germany’s numerous famous composers.
