ID theft service

Identity theft has become one of the biggest crime-related issues in the UK: according to estimates, around 100,000 people are targeted in the UK alone every year. As a result, RIAS has created a free identity theft service meant to provide our home insurance customers with the reassurance they need in the event that they become victims of identity theft.

What is identity theft?

Criminals are now actively seeking personal information that can be used for a variety of needs: from opening bank accounts to taking out passports, mortgages and even driving licences using your name. In the event that your identity is stolen you could lose access to your bank account and have to go through a time-consuming process to regain control of what should already be yours.

There are a host of signs that you may have been the victim of identity theft, including: refused applications for loans, credit cards and mortgages even with a good credit history; letters from debt collectors that are not related to you; bank statements that show unusual transactions or correspondence that does not arrive on time; and bills for services that you have not requested.


So what can RIAS do to help?

If you’re a RIAS home insurance customer and believe you have been the victim of identity theft, then your first step should be to get in touch with the police and request a crime reference number. Once you have obtained this, call the RIAS identity theft helpline on 01444 442343.

An experienced and knowledgeable team will help put your mind at rest by following a series of steps:

Step one: case manager. You’ll receive a dedicated case manager who will help you and provide expert advice.

Step two: request your credit files. It may be necessary for you to provide evidence that your identity has been stolen in order to regain access to your accounts and restore your credit rating. In this case your case manager will then work with all three major credit agencies (Experian, Equifax and CallCredit) to establish a full overview of your personal credit history. They will create and dispatch the relevant documents and explanatory notes to you, so that you can complete the process of clearing your name with minimal stress.

Step three: identity recovery. If your credit report identifies any credit agreements that you did not take out yourself, your case manager will work with you to correct and amend your credit file.

Step four: provide proof of identity. In some situations, you may need to provide your bank, or another company, with further proof that you have been the victim of identity fraud. Your case manager will help by putting all of the evidence you need together on your behalf, including providing you with proof of identity and the documents you need to fully clear your name.
