Your car insurance optional extras

When you take out a car insurance policy with RIAS, you can choose from a range of optional extras to ensure your car is fully protected no matter what. Our optional car insurance extras include:

Excess Protection

Excess Protection allows you to claim reimbursement of your car insurance excess (up to £300) following the successful settlement of a claim in which no recovery can be made from a third party. This could include malicious damage, fire, theft or attempted theft and accidental damage in the following situations:

  • If the third party has driven off
  • If the car has been stolen
  • If the accident was your fault

Legal Expenses

If you are involved in a legal dispute involving your vehicle, the last thing you need is the additional stress that comes from paying what could be thousands of pounds in solicitor fees or foregoing legal advice and attempting to settle the matter without support.

Our Legal Expenses cover provides up to £100,000 of cover for you, your passengers and the car in the event of an incident which was the fault of another insured identifiable person. This can help cover the cost of a solicitor, legal advice and support in settling the claim. This cover includes claims for:

  • Personal Injury cover for you and your passengers following a road traffic accident which was not your fault.
  • Uninsured Loss Recovery - to pursue damages claims arising from a road traffic accident which was not your fault and recovering costs from the person at fault, such as medical treatment, travel costs incurred due to the loss of use of your car etc.
  • Defence of Motoring Prosecutions – defending a criminal legal action arising from your use of your car.
  • Motor Contract Disputes - pursuing or defending contract disputes relating to the sale of goods or services associated with your car, including the car itself.
  • Vehicle Cloning – you will be covered for costs to defend civil or criminal proceedings, if your car’s identity is stolen.
  • Motor Insurance Database Disputes – covers costs for disputes following incorrect information about you or your car being recorded on the Motor Insurance Database.

24 hour helpline

Our legal expenses also provides you with access to a 24 hour helpline for expert support on the following:

  • European legal helpline e.g. if you have a car accident whilst driving in Europe
  • UK tax helpline

Key Protection

Claim up to £1,500 (including VAT) towards lock and key replacements and onward transportation in the event of lost or stolen vehicle, home, and/or office keys.
This service includes:

  • Reprogramming of alarms and immobilizers and replacement of security safe keys.
  • 24 hour assistance, 365 days a year
  • Up to £75 per day (including VAT) for up to 3 days car hire, taxi fares or reasonable public transport if you are stranded from home due to loss or theft of your car keys
  • Cover for all keys in your household

Breakdown cover

If you suffer an unexpected vehicle breakdown on the road, our breakdown cover can ensure that you have access to the help you need when you need it. The benefits of choosing our car breakdown cover include:

  • High quality service protecting you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
  • Three levels of cover to choose from  (Roadside Assistance, Comprehensive Gold and Total Protection)
  • Cover for European motoring with our Total Protection option
  • Doorstep service for problems that occur within one mile of your home with our Comprehensive Gold or Total Protection option
  • Recovery of car, drivers and passengers to the nearest garage in the event of a breakdown or accident
  • Roadside repair for minor mechanical and electrical problems

Replacement Car cover

If you are involved in an accident which was your fault, or your car has been stolen or written off, we can arrange a replacement hire car for up to 21 continuous days. This includes incidents where:

  • The car has been stolen and unrecovered
  • The car has been written off
  • Vandalism and malicious damage

Replacement Car cover can only be provided where a third party is unknown. It can be provided for yourself and up to two additional named drivers, and is available to people up to and including the age of 83. We also offer a £150 cash alternative if preferred.
